Process & Expectations

Welcoming a Japanese Terrier into your life is a special journey, and at Year of the Terrier we take great care to ensure our puppies are placed in loving and prepared homes. Below is an overview of our process and what to expect when applying for one of our puppies.

The Application Process

The first step is submitting an application. Once I receive your application, I will review it and may reach out with follow-up questions to get to know you better. From there, applications are either approved or denied. If approved, you will be added to the waitlist.

Waitlisted families are among the first to learn about potential litters, upcoming puppies, meet-and-greet opportunities, and co-ownership possibilities. When a puppy or adult dog becomes available that I believe would be a good fit for you, I will contact you directly via email.

Reserving Your Puppy

If you are ready to commit, a $500 non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your Japanese Terrier. At that time, paperwork will also be completed. The total price for a Japanese Terrier is $3000, with the opportunity to earn up to a $500 rebate for titles and health testing.

All Japanese Terriers are placed on a co-ownership with Year of the Terrier. Breeding rights are retained by me regardless of whether the puppy is in a pet, show, or performance home. All pet puppies are required to be spayed or neutered once they reach the appropriate age.

Raising Our Puppies

Our puppies are raised in the heart of our home, where they are socialized, nurtured, and introduced to the foundations of training. They experience daily handling, age-appropriate enrichment, and early exposure to the sights and sounds of family life. This helps set them up to grow into well-adjusted companions who are confident in the world around them.

Expectations for New Homes

While Japanese Terriers may be adorable and have charmed many fans on TikTok, they are still a primitive terrier breed with unique needs. Families must be prepared to provide proper socialization, structure, and training throughout their dog’s life. I expect all of my puppies to be loved as pets first and foremost, and I expect their future families to have done thoughtful research on the breed before committing.

I love these little dogs with all my heart and soul, and their wellbeing will always come first. My goal is not only to place puppies in the right homes, but also to build lasting relationships with their families as we work together to preserve and protect this incredible breed.
